The Rajdhani Book Fair is a registered organization & it was formed by 8 nos. of writers of Oriya literature during the year 2000. This is the only popular book fair of the state where more than 50,000 visitores come to visit the fair everyday. The organizers organize literary discussions, conferences, seminars, symoposiums and inaugurate a number of new publications & felicitate the best writers & publishers of the year in the Book Fair Mandup during the 12 days long book fair.
During last 11 years, the Book Fair Committee have organized 121 literary meetings & awarded 130 writers & publishers who have outstanding performances in Oriya Literature.
In the month of January of the year 1999, the 1st Children’s Book Fair of Orissa was organized at Jayadev Bhawan ( Previously Soochana Bhawan) ground, Bhubaneswar, Orissa for 8days on behalf of Children writers’ Academy under the leadership of Dr. Upendra Kumar Jena, President, Bankim Chandra Nayak, Vice-President, Ramesh Chandra Swain, Secretary, Bidhu Bhusan Pattanayak, Joint Secretary & some other executive committee members of the Academy. This book fair became grand success & was appreciated by the readers & the publishers. Thus, this endeavor encouraged the organizers to proceed for a general book fair in the next year.
As a result, the Rajdhani Book Fair was born in the millennium year, 2000 under the leadership of Dr. Upendra Kumar Jena, President, Ramesh Chandra Swain, Secy., Sri Bidhu Bhusan Pattanayak, Convenor, Sri Kali Prasad Das, Coordinator & executive body members Sri Akul Chandra Nath, Sri Bira Kishore Pradhan, Sri Brahmananda Nayak & Smt. Kamalini Mallick. A decision was taken to organize the fair in the pre-winter which was a better time for the general readers & students. Then the 1st Rajdhani Book Fair was organized at Exhibition Ground, Bhubaneswar in the month of December.
1st. Rajdhani Book fair-2000 :
The 1st Rajdhani Book Fair was organized in the temple city of Orissa from 1.12.2000 to 10.12.2000 at Exhibition Ground, Bhubaneswar. At that time 130 stalls were opened & the fair was continued for 10 days. At the outset, the fair became grand success as the publishers from 4 states of India were participated & more than 1,50,000 visitors visited the fair. Shri . Sarat Kumar Kar, Speaker, Orissa Legislative Assembly had inaugurated the fair. During the period of book fair seminars, conferences were arranged in the auditorium. 7nos. of writers were felicitated for their outstanding performance in Oriya literature.
2nd. Rajdhani Book Fair-2001
The 2nd Rajdhani Book Fair held at Exhibition ground, Bhubaneswar for 10 days with effect from 1.12.2001 to 10.12.2001. Shri M.M.Rajendran, His Excellency, the Governor of Orissa inaugurated the fair on 1.12.2001 & Shri Navin Pattnaik, Chief Minister of Orissa was the Chief guest in the Closing Ceremony on 10.12.2001. In this occasion a number of books were released by both the guests. The number of participants in the fair increased along with the visitors. Approximately 2,20,000 visitors visited the fair.
3rd. Rajdhani Book Fair-2002
On public demand, the 3rd. Rajdhani Book Fair was extended for another one day & organized from 1.12.2002 to 11.12.2002 at Exhibition ground, Bhubaneswar. Shri M. M. Rajendran, His Excellency, the Governor of Orissa had inaugurated the fair on 1.12.2002 & Sri Navin Pattnaik, the Chief Minister of Orissa was the Chief Guest in the Closing Ceremony on 11.12.2002. Approximately 2,80,000 visitors visited the fair.
4th. Rajdhani Book Fair-2003
The 4th. Rajdhani Book Fair organized for 11days with effect from 1.12.2003 at IDCO Exhibition ground, Bhubaneswar. Shri Navin Pattnaik, the Chief Minister of Orissa had inaugurated the fair on 1.12.2003 & Shri M.M.Rajendran, His Excellency, The Governor of Orissa was the Chief Guest in the closing ceremony on 11.12.2003. The organizers organized literary discussions, conferences, seminars and symposiums, inaugurated a number of new publications & felicitated the best writers & publishers of the year. Approximately 3,40,000 visitors were visited the fair.
5th Rajdhani Book Fair-2004
According to heavy public demand, the period of the 5th Rajdhani Book Fair was extended for another one day & organized for 12 days with effect from 1.12.2004 to 12.12.2004 at IDCO Exhibition Ground, Bhubaneswar. Shri Navin Pattnaik, the Chief Minister of Orissa had inaugurated the fair on 1.12.2004 & Shri Rameswar Thakur, His Excellency, The Governor of Orissa was the Chief guest in the closing ceremony on 12.12.2004. This year the book fair committee decided to publish a directory on the oriya books published from the year of its first printing. The committee compiled & published the Oriya Publications Year Book containing the publication record of all Oriya books published from the year 1804 to 2004 which was a 1st documentary collection. This book was released & sold a number of copies which was also a record selling. The book was contained 300 pages & cost only Rs.30/-. All copies of the 1st edition were exhausted within the period of book fair. This year, approximately 4,00,000 visitors were visited the fair.
6th Rajdhani Book Fair-2005
The 6th Rajdhani Book Fair was organized for 12 days with effect from 1.12.2005 to 12.12.2005 at IDCO Exhibition Ground, Bhubaneswar. Shri Navin Pattnaik, the Chief Minister of Orissa had inaugurated the fair on 1.12.2005 & Shri Rameswar Thakur, His Excellency, the Governor of Orissa was the chief Guest in the closing ceremony on 12.12.2005. The book fair committee decided to update the data & publish the 2nd edition of the Oriya Publications Year Book. Accordingly the 2nd edition containing 450 pages published & sold at a cost of Rs.50/- each. The fair committee arranged 12days long literary & cultural functions in the auditorium. The number of participants from all over India increased this year. Approximately 4,60,000 visitors were visited the fair.
7th Rajdhani Book Fair-2006
The 7th Rajdhani Book Fair was organized for 12days with effect from1.12.2006 to 12.12.2006 at IDCO Exhibition ground, Bhubaneswar. Shri Navin Pattnaik, the Chief Minister of Orissa had inaugurated the fair on 1.12.2006 & Shri Janaki Ballav Pattanaik, the Ex-Chief Minister of Orissa was the Chief Guest in the closing ceremony on 12.12.2006. The theme of this year’s book fair was “ The protection of Oriya language & literature”. The book fair committee organized 12 days long literary functions on oriya literature. A prize was declared to honor the highest purchaser of books. Suggestions were invited from the visitors regarding the role of the govt. to safeguard the oriya language & literature. In this occasion the 3rd edition of the Oriya Publications Year Book containing 600 pages was published & sold at a price of Rs.50/- each. This year, the number of stalls increased & secured No.1 position among all the book fairs of the state. Approximately 5,30,000 visitors were visited the fair in 12 days.
8th Rajdhani Book Fair-2007
The 8th Rajdhani Book Fair was organized for 12 days with effect from 1.12.2007 to 12.12.2007 at IDCO Exhibition Ground, Bhubaneswar. Sri Navin Pattnaik, the C.M. of Orissa inaugurated the fair on 1.12.08 at 5pm. Literal & Cultural functions were organised for 12days. In this occassion 45 new publications were inaugurated. 14 writers were feliciated for their best books published during the period from January 2005 to December 2007. In the closing ceremony Sri J.B. Pattnaik, Ex-CM of Orissa had grace the occassion as Chief Guest & felicitated the writers & publishers. The 4th edition of Oriya publications year book-2007 was published, inaugurated & sold in this occassion. The number of participants from all over the country was increased & made a record. Approxmiately 6 lakh visitors visited the fair in 12 days.
9th Rajdhani Book Fair-2008
The 9th Rajdhani Book fair was organised at IDCO Exhibition Ground, Bhubaneswar for 12 days with effect from 05.12.2008 to 16.12.2008. Sri Naveen Pattnaik, Chief Minister of Orissa inaugurated the fair at 5 PM on 5th December 2008. 15 number of distinguisshed writers and distinguished publisher was felicitated. Aproxmately 7 lakh visitors visted the fair during the period of 12 days.
10th Rajdhani Book Fair-2009
The 10th Rajdhani Book fair was organised at IDCO Exhibition Ground, Bhubaneswar for 12 days with effect from 26.11.2009 to 09.12.2009.
